The late Daniel Holterman, PhD, spent his career in cancer research but was most proud of his service on the board of Arizona Myeloma Network. “Not only was he a founding board member, but he was also their scientific advisor,” says Gary Egan, Daniel’s husband of 41 years. “He helped convene a high-level medical research conference annually for ten years. The best specialists in the country leading the fight to cure multiple myeloma were invited.”
To honor Daniel and continue his legacy in cancer research, Gary has arranged a bequest to the MMRF through his trust. “The MMRF’s focus on research aligns perfectly with Daniel’s life’s work and reflects our desired philanthropic legacy,” says Gary. He has also participated in the MMRF Scottsdale Walk/Run campaign for two years, rallying dozens of friends and family to raise thousands of dollars in Daniel’s memory.
This fall, Daniel will be posthumously honored with the Scottsdale Walk/Run’s Spirit of Hope Award, recognizing his courage and accomplishments.
Daniel’s drive to continue to make the world a better place inspired Gary’s gift. “Dan’s story is compelling because he was a 33-year cancer survivor, an oncology scientist, and someone who followed all the latest developments and treatments as they became available for his cancer,” Gary says. “I want to provide financial support for to the next generation of researchers by supporting the MMRF Research Fellowship Program. Through this gift, the MMRF can give a worthy research candidate starting out in the field a chance to make contributions that will help others—much like Daniel did during his 33-year career.”
Gary encourages others to consider leaving a legacy gift through their will or trust to support the MMRF and help other families going through something similar to what Daniel went through as a patient and Gary went through as a caregiver.
